City Council received a memo this week that showed that although overall tree canopy growth has grown slightly from 2017 to 2022 in Ottawa, that is primarily due to growth in the rural areas. Alta Vista Ward experienced a slight decrease of 1.86% less canopy cover during this time. While there was a number of extreme weather events and the derecho of May 22nd as well as trees removed both due to disease and development, I am concerned about the decline. A tree equity analysis has also been prepared as well that shows 8 priority areas where short -term actions will be taken, two of these are in Alta Vista Ward -the Herongate neighbourhood (shared with Ward 10) and East Industrial/Russell Heights/ Sheffield Glen. I look forward to continuing to work with groups across the Ward to improve the canopy, with an increased focus on these two neighbourhoods.
